Sadly, Little Saxham has no public footpaths. It does have ONE bridle way, however.
In this section, we'll help you make the most of the limited facilities and guide you across parts of the village where you can walk unafraid of the farmer's dog...
Start at the Church - the centre of the village.
Head along the main road towards Bury St Edmunds. After 800 metres turn right at a track marked by a white stone on a grassy triangle. Proceed for 200 metres and cross a cattle grid. Crofts Place (large red brick house) is on your immediate left. Follow the track for 150 metres, with a pond and moat on your left. Where the track bears sharp right, keep straight on and head for the gate in the far corner of the field.
Through the gate and you are now in Ickworth Park. Head down the hill, keeping reasonably close to the trees on the left. At the bottom of the hill is a gate, leading onto a track. Turn left; ahead of you is Mordeboys Cottage. Pass to the left of the cottage, through a gate and head up the hill along a track.
After 400 metres you hit the Bury road at Crowswood Cottage. Cross (carefully) straight over - you are now on the one and only Bridle Way! Continue straight up the well-defined trackway for just over 800 metres, when you arrive at Warren Lodge. The official right of way is to the left of the house, through a gate along a wide grassy path (indicated by a way-mark). But the owners actually prefer you to walk along the gravel track that passes to the right of the house. Exit via the gate the other side of the house and continue straight ahead.
This track emerges at right angles to another track after 300 metres. Turn left and you pass Willowbank Cattery and arrive on the minor road from Litle Saxham to Risby. Turn left and continue past Honey Hill Cottages and Honey Hill Farm, down the hill to the T-junction. Straight ahead of you is the Church, possibly hidden by the trees. Bear left and right and you are back at the churchyard where you started.
Distance - 3 miles. Time - 1½ hours max.
Warning - this is all on roads, but they're mostly minor ones.
From the Church head on the road towards Hargrave and Chevington. Continue for a mile until you reach a junction signposted 'Great Saxham'. Turn right here and continue past Cobb's Hall and Great Saxham Church, through the village of Great Saxham, until you reach the main Barrow to Bury St Edmunds road.
Turn right and continue back towards Little Saxham Church.
Take care when walking on the busier roads. Keep to the right side of the road, so you are facing the oncoming traffic (it's easier to leap in the ditch).
Distance - 4 miles. Time - 2 hours max.
