Little Saxham

The Crofts family

The village of Little Saxham will always be remembered for its long association with members of the Crofts Family. From 1531, when Little Saxham Hall was purchased by John Crofts from the descendants of Thomas Lucas, the Crofts lived in the village for some 200 years.

The Church Vestry contains some remarkable memorials to the Crofts. Foremost is the baroque scuplture of William (Baron Crofts) and his second wife Elizabeth. Even more unusual, perhaps, is the bust of William's mother Elizabeth on the wall opposite.

To access the Vestry, you will need to find a churchwarden for the key. Contact either Catherine Burt at 5 Church Cottages (01284 810134) or Hugo Smith at the Old Rectory (01284 810260).

Here is a list of all the Crofts mentioned in the Parish Registers.
