Little Saxham

The Larner/Lawner family

There has been a link to the Larner, Lawner, or Lawney family in Little Saxham for many centuries. The earliest mention is of Edmundo de Launeney, who paid 9 pence in the Lay Subsidy of 1327.  Then, Edmundus Lavenhey (probably the same person), was one of six jurymen in 1341.  In 1381, Johannes Lawney, Farmer, paid two shillings in Poll Tax.

Larners (or Laurners) were being baptized or married in the village between 1562 and 1628 (see Parish Registers).

The ancient Lawners Wood has existed for many centuries; it features on the earliest known map of Little Saxham, in 1638, where it is called Lawns Wood.  The original 16-acre wood is now only half of its original size.

Lawners HouseThe house on the road to Hargrave called Lawners House has variously been known as Lawners Close and The Lawns.  The present house was built about 1850 and probably replaced a former cottage on the same site.
